Nian Gao (Steamed Lunar Chinese New Year Cake)


Nian gao, a traditional steamed Lunar Chinese New Year cake. It symbolizes prosperity and great promotions in career.
Just 3 ingredients only :- glutinous rice flour, sugar and water.







Here's the recipe,


Ingredients:- 
1 kg glutinous rice flour
960 gm sugar
1250 ml water
1 1/2 tbsp cooking oil
Banana leaves - toasted over fire
                        - Scald with hot water


Method:-
1) Soften the banana leaves, lined the 'gong gong' (small containers) and set aside.
2) Cook sugar till caramelised or golden brown (with medium heat)
3) Off the heat, gradually pour in water. When water added, very slowly, on the heat again and stir till all dissolve. Set aside to cool.
4) Place glutinous rice flour in a bowl, add the caramelise mixture a little by little at a time. Knead and stir till well combined and no lumps of flour.
5) Then add in the oil and mix well.
6) Preheat the steamer with boiling water simmering.
7) Carefully pour the batter into the prepared lined 'gong gong' and put to steam.
8) Steam at high heat for 1/2 hour then lower to medium for another 4 1/2 hours.

    1. You're welcome, dear. Yes,u can use pressure cooker. Steam for 45 mins. I haven't try before using pressure cooker.
